This infographic is titled “Older Adults in Social Housing: A systematically vulnerable population that needs to be prioritized”. The study is described below the title. This policy note describes the characteristics of older adults living in social housing in Canada and discusses why they are a vulnerable, underserved population in need of immediate attention and priority. Social housing is defined as lower-cost rental housing provided by government, regional, or not-for-profit organizations.
The next section is titled “Older Adults in Social Housing have”, which lists characteristics accompanied by some associated pictures and logos. Older adults in social housing have low income, poor housing conditions, difficulty accessing supports, low health and digital literacy, higher chronic disease risk, poor mental health and social isolation, high emergency utilization, and a lack of research and tailored programs.
The next section is a Call to Action! In Ontario, there are as many seniors in social housing as there are in long-term care. Governments, policy-makers, and researchers need to support this growing, vulnerable population by dedicating funding, research, and program/resource allocation, that is informed by the demographics, social determinants of health, and needs of this population.
